Shoes can be an important part in treating pain in your feet. There are many instances where the shoes are part of the cause of pain. So in some situations, foot pain can be reduced or even eliminated just by changing the type or style of shoe we are wearing. A general rule: If you have pain or discomfort in one pair of shoes but not others, than it is likely the shoe, and not the foot, that is the problem. Shoe basics: shoes have a sole that come in a variety of different thickness, and flexibilities. There is also a "Last" which is often a thin cardboard or synthetically made plastic type of material. The "Last" may be half the length of the shoes, or 3/4 length or full length. The longer the last, the more stiff the shoe. So if you need more cushioning in the forefoot, than look for a shoe with a 1/2 or 3/4 last. If you need a more rigid sole to protect or stabilize your foot, than a full last will provide that. It may be difficult to tell which shoe has what, so feel free to ask the sales person at the shoe store. If not available or they don't know, just grab the shoe by the heel and the toe, and see how easily it bends and where the bending occurs. If the shoe is hard to bend, then it likley has a full last. If easy to bend in half, then likley a 1/2 last and not as supportive. When evaluating the pain you have in your feet, pay attention to what shoes you are wearing when that pain is at it worst. Is there something about that pair of shoes that may be contributing to the pain?
